Procter & Gamble Co., the world’s largest consumer products firm, plans to bring nearly 1,000 new jobs to the area next year with the opening of a 1.7 million distribution center near Shippensburg.

The facility at 9300 Olde Scotland Road, which is being built by Liberty Property Trust in Southampton Township, Franklin County, is expected to be open next July, said Jeff LeRoy, a spokesman for P&G. Liberty’s investment to develop the 183-acre site is more than $93 million.

“Once fully operational, the facility will have four to six P&G employees and 900 to 1,000 (contract) workers,” he said.

Negotiations are ongoing with potential third-party operators, he said.

The new facility will ship manufactured goods to retailers throughout the Northeast, LeRoy said.

The area’s highway network and proximity to major metropolitan regions on the East Coast was a major deciding factor, he said.

A spokeswoman for Liberty Property Trust was not immediately available for comment on construction costs and to name the general contractor on the project.

“I think it’s going to have a great impact,” said Jonathan Bowser, executive director at Cumberland County Economic Development. “Being so close to the border, I think a lot of residents in the western part of the county and even in the middle (will have) employment opportunities.”

This also is an opportunity to drive new residential and commercial development in that part of Cumberland County, as well as Franklin County, he said.

“When you start to bring large employers like that into the area, you going to see a lot of ancillary businesses,” Bowser said. “It gives you a lot of clout.”

Southampton officials were not immediately available for comment on the project.

Site work began in June. More than 500 contractors will work on the construction, LeRoy said.
