Midstate residential building permits continue to run ahead of last year’s pace, according to new figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Its building permits survey recorded 1,189 permits through May in the Harrisburg-Carlisle, Lancaster, Lebanon and York-Hanover metropolitan areas. That was up from 968 through the first five months of 2012, or 22.8 percent.

By area, the York-Hanover market saw the biggest percentage growth through May at 65.9 percent, according to the Census. There were 292 residential permits in five months.

Lebanon was No. 2 at 46.8 percent growth and 138 permits through May. Harrisburg-Carlisle reported the most permits of the four areas at 419. That was up 34.7 percent, according to the Census.

Lancaster saw a decline to 340 permits through May compared with 387 after five months a year ago.
