Pennsylvania ranked No. 3 among U.S. states in 2012 for the number of new corporate facilities or expansions, and No. 1 among northeast states, according to Site Selection magazine.

Companies broke ground on 430 qualifying projects in the commonwealth, Site Selection said. To count, a project must cost at least $1 million, create at least 50 new jobs or add at least 20,000 square feet of space.

Pennsylvania also ranked No. 3 for 2011. Texas repeated as No. 1 in 2012 with 761 projects; Ohio was No. 2, with 491.

All three states are hotbeds of shale gas development, which helped drive their results.

“This recognition from Site Selection is verification that our efforts to improve the business climate and encourage job growth is paying off,” Gov. Tom Corbett said in a statement.

Among midsize “tier two” metropolitan areas, Lancaster County ranked in Site Selection’s nationwide Top 10 with 33 projects, the governor’s office said. The Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton area also ranked in the top 10.

Three Pennsylvania micropolitan areas made the nation’s Top 10, with eight projects each, the magazine said: the Chambersburg area, comprising Franklin County; the New Castle area, comprising Lawrence County; and the Sayre area, comprising Bradford County.

Site Selection, published six times a year, is the official magazine of the Industrial Asset Management Council.
