Kreider Farms Treatment Plant Project Begins
Bion, which has offices in Old Bethpage, N.Y., and Crestone, Colo., closed Wednesday on a $7.75 million loan to build the plant from Pennvest, the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, Bion President Mark Smith said. The project will be the largest of its kind to date, Smith said.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kreider Farms in Penn Township.
The plant, expected to begin initial operations early next year, will have the capacity to treat waste from up to 2,000 cattle, reducing a key source of pollution in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Credits for the treated waste can be sold to other polluters to help them meet their targets under the federal Chesapeake Bay cleanup mandates.
